PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES AND INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
When teachers are planning a class they need to be
aware of two important facts. First, how he/she is going to introduce the topic
to students which are called introductory
activities. They
are useful when teachers want to activate students’ knowledge of the topic. In
addition, teachers could use three types of introductory activities; lead in which is used to
introduce the content of the lesson in order to make learners link the topic
with the lesson. An example of lead in is brainstorming. Warmers are used to make
students feel comfortable or just to wake them up. An example is pair work
activity. Indeed, Icebreakers
are used to make the class know each other. An example of this activity is
mingling survey.
Second, how a teacher is going to present the topic.
It is here when teachers use presentation techniques. One of the presentation
technique used by teachers is PPP; Presentation, Practice and Production.
Furthermore, this technique has plenty of features that teachers need to take
into consideration before applying it. The language is taught with a situational presentation
in which teachers make sure that learners understand by practicing. All the
activities given by the teacher are restricted practice. Moreover, to check if learners understand the
grammatical structures teachers will use concept questions. The other
presentation technique is Task- Based Learning. In this technique teachers
begin the lesson contextualizing
the topic and later give students a task to complete. What´s more, teachers
will discuss any problem learners had with the task. As a final point, teachers
give another task to check if they correct mistakes.
For some teachers PPP is a controlled technique that
would not help students to learn the language properly which is not correct
because when teachers use PPP technique they are aware if their learners
understand the language by providing a real situational presentation.
Therefore, Individual, substitution and choral drills are controlled tasks
which are going to be part of the practice stage. To conclude, learners will
have a production stage where teachers can control if students have learned the
lesson.

I think that we have to check students`understanding all the time and that is why most teachers prefer to use controlled activitites.
